How the Pay No Sales Tax network works

This works because of its simplicity, and because it's a Win-Win.

Imagine, if you will, a busy few hours of shopping in a clothing store. After trying on countless outfits, pairs of shoes, and gloves, you have made several selections and it's time to check out.

You believe you have kept track of your total expenditure, say $280.00, but then, at the cash, realize how nasty the sales tax will be on top of all of that. You may even consider putting back an item or two. Very upsetting.

Your total bill could be $316.40 after the tax is added in. A difference of $36.40 right out of your pocket. Could have been a nice lunch or an afternoon at the movies with your little girl.

Instead, your mind has adjusted to the tax but you are not very happy, and this may have an impact on your feeling about the store, though it wasn't the store's fault.

Then, as you are putting your wallet away, you see that the shopper next in line has purchased pretty much the same articles, but the total at the cash was only the $280.00!

Apparently the shopper had shown the cashier some membership card, and didn't have to pay the sales tax on top of the $280.00. What the heck???

Obviously the member already knew that the store was a participating retailer in this network. The display sign on the counter would explain that and point you to this web-site.

Did the happy shopper not pay any sales tax? Effectively, yes. Or the clerk adjusted the purchase so that the final total simply met the list prices posted throughout the store. There are other ways too.

Will the store owner submit sales tax to the government. They better. That's the responsibility of the store owner. However, how and exactly how much is up to them.
